Yay! School is finally over and summer has rolled in! I hope everyone had a great school year, and your summer is going great! I just wanted to give an update that this year we kick-started an annual drive to give school supplies to kids in local title I schools. A title I school is a school that is decided "poor" or "unfunded". These schools can barely pass their own budgets, let alone provide school supplies to children in need. Therefore in a joint effort with Lorax Club, EAUC collected slightly used binders that will be cleaned and prepared for kids in one of Maryland's title I schools! II

The Change:Yup, we are changing! Changing what? Changing our name! We have officially changed our name to Enhancing Awareness for Under-Educated Children! Dr. Ramona Crowley of Barstowe Elementary School pointed out a grave mistake we made. The kids we are helping are certainly not UNEDUCATED. However only UNDER-educated/ under-privileged. So a big thanks to Dr. Crowley for pointing that out. I had not even noticed what I was saying!
For any EAUC members or non-EAUC members, here is the letter I will be sending to our governor to advocate for uneducated children by suggesting a mixed income housing community. ***EAUC members, If you want more information or examples of mixed income housing, click on the category named "Mixed Income Housing" on the right sidebar!*** Dear Governor Hogan, Hi, I am Michael Metler. I am a junior at Northern High-School in Calvert County. I am a 2015 Carson Scholar, and active advocator for uneducated children and the achievement gap. I am also working contingently with the achievement gap committee at Citizens Advisory Committee for CCPS. On behalf of, and as president of, “Enhancing Awareness for Uneducated Children”, I would like to provide a proposal regarding said achievement gap. All politics excluded. I am currently enrolled in Advanced Placement Government and Politics, so I understand the complexity of making decisions in your profession. Given your profession, you may or may not have an understanding of what a “mixed-income housing community” is. Essentially, lower and higher income houses are put together in a community, in hopes that the higher income families positively influence the lower income families. This solution would be beneficial in two aspects. The first aspect is the achievement gap. You and I both know that appearance and composure can go a long way. One mixed community is not going to solve the problem, however leading by example, and starting a chain reaction will. When Saint Bernard, New Orleans was struck by hurricane Katrina, several private and federal agencies came together to rebuild a previously crime infested community. The results have been remarkable. The Honorable Barrack Obama himself has even visited and congratulated the new community “Columbia Parc”. I will not go into specifics, however not only are the results are truly wonderful, but the homes are enthralling. The second aspect is more local. I am not as fond of this issue as others may be, however I believe that I have a pretty good understanding. As a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee, I can apprehend that homes are expensive in Calvert County. Since new families with lower income cannot afford to buy homes here, the education system in Calvert County is losing enrollment. I believe that a mixed income housing will nail this issue as well. Mr. Hogan, one hundred and twenty-six million youth are illiterate. Poor students can receive up to eighteen times less public education funding than the wealthiest. You cannot evade the fact that there is an education crisis in this world. This same mal-education then leads to poverty. I only ask that you help us begin a revolution. And that you consider a “Mixed-income housing community”. ***EAUC members, again, if you need any help, just contact Metler!***
Sunburst Youth Challenge Academy (SYA) (Orange County, California) is a military style academy built on second chances and support for high school students in need. "The academy is a 5 1/2 month long residential "military style" academy structured to promote an academic environment where students will earn 55 High School credits, develop leadership, job skills, and academic skills, while improving self esteem, pride, and confidence." A life changing academy for troubled youth, Sunburst can force any student into success from any background! Please watch these videos about Sunburst and Grizzly. They provide good information about the two inspiring academies! Saturday, the 4th annual Science and Engineering Exposition took place, and was a lot of fun! I would divide the day into four events for me: Judging, Expo, Presentation, and Awards. Here is a recap of each of these events! Judging During the judging section of the day (8:15am-11:00am), the Science Fair was closed to the public, and all the judges roamed the room asking each contender questions about his/her project, and giving feedback. Each participant was officially scored by three judges, but after that, judges were still welcome to ask questions and give feedback. My first 20 minuets was a bit of a disaster! My science teacher was running late with my board! Though I was not penalized, it was quite stressful! As for my project, you can read my backboard to see results (the bodies of text for research and conclusion are backwards). You might have to save the picture and zoom in. I thought it was fascinating that each judge had a different subject to comment on, and give feedback on. All the judges that were there differed in field and background. I learned some valuable information from the judges. One judge constructively criticized the need for more dependent variables to be monitored, and to keep only one independent variable. One judge commented on the need for a safety precaution section, and another for an abstract. Another judge advised that I have a partner. One judge simply gave me some information about different medical fields he thought I would be good in. The most impressed judge admired the fact that I approached a real life problem rather than preforming some lab that could be pulled from the internet (ex: Lemon batteries, fuel cells, food composition, or crystal forming. All of which I saw). ExpoAfter judging was over, I left my project for the public to examine, and checked out the Expo. (11:00am-1:00pm) There was a large body of students and organizations who showed up to present scientific exhibits of all sorts. There were experiments, educational presentations, robots, class information, tattoos, candy, food, and everything else STEM you could think of! So during this part of the day I went around exploring the many different exhibits and presentations. There was certainly a ton of things to learn and explore, and I would recommend bringing anyone interested in science, math, engineering, and technology to this exposition! Presentation After we spent a good amount of time at the exposition I just sat next to my project and answered questions from students and parents about my project. While I was not answering questions, I hung out with mt girlfriend, talked to my project neighbor about his exosuit, and visited other projects! (1:00pm-3:15pm) Awards: Sadly, I did not receive ONE award. Half of the awards were given to the same two people who had decent projects, but fit one specific category that many monetary awards were centered on. I also did not get any overall 3rd, 2nd, or 1st place awards. I have learned SO much this year though, and honestly, this project was just the beginning of something bigger and better! Expect to see me next year, and expect an awesome project involving new solutions, and new applications! I will also be working with a partner next year... My girlfriend :)

I aspire to become a nuclear chemist/ engineer when I grow up, but my most important goal is to make an impact on the world. About This Blog:In this blog, I hope to share my personal goals for this club, as well as it's progress and current state. I will often try to post about the issue at hand also. If I see any news relating to our club, I will post it here! I will also periodically blog about my personal life and goals. Categories:
